Fine Art Prints for All Seasons

March 13, 2022

Everyone seems to love the changing of the seasons. By the time winter ends, like it is now, everyone is ready for the warmer temperatures and flowers of spring. Most people change certain accents in their decor along with the season. Things like tablecloths, centerpieces, and maybe a garland or floral accents on the mantle or elsewhere around the living room. But one easy way to change with the seasons is to change the art on your walls.

I've written previously about the benefits of hanging landscape and nature photography in your home or office. But embracing the changing seasons by also changing the art on your walls is a great way to mentally and emotionally accept and prepare for the change, and even celebrate it.

El Capitan at sunrise in Yosemite National Park.

El Capitan

El Capitan is simply awesome bathed in the warm light of dawn. The sun's first rays of the morning set the iconic granite peak aglow while the tranquil Merced River winds its way through Yosemite valley below. At the base of the majestic mountain is an explosion of brilliant spring blooms, casting a colorful hue on the valley's rich meadows. The deep verdant leaves contrast with the stony gray of El Capitan, creating a vivid and memorable contrast of pastels, blues, and greens. It's a stunning reminder of nature's beauty and of its ability to captivate and inspire.

Highlight an Artist

One great way to change your decor with the seasons is to highlight an artist. For instance, a painter for one season, a photographer for another, and a watercolor artist or maybe a printmaker for another. This is a great option if you have a feature wall, with several pieces of art, or several prominent walls in your living room or dining room that could highlight your favorite work from a particular artist.

Sunset at Upper Falls

The setting sun creates a soft, warm glow under the Portage Bridge above Letchworth State Park's Upper Falls.

If you have one feature wall, a collage of several smaller pieces surrounding a larger piece can make for a beautiful conversation starter, and if the subject matter matches the season, it will always feel fresh, while also reminding you of memories of past seasons when those pieces were on display.

Rolling green hills with blue skies and puffy clouds overhead on a sunny day.

Afternoon Bliss in the Palouse

The rolling hills of the Palouse region in eastern Washington, freshly planted with crops of winter wheat, bathe in the warm spring sunshine as billowing white cumulonimbus clouds pass overhead near Colfax, Washington. The play of light and shadow over these lush green hills against a blue springtime sky creates a tranquil scene of natural beauty that will bring serenity to any space in your home or office.

I have a friend who is a painter, and she regularly rotates the prints in her home with the seasons, and the focal point is always the piece above the fireplace. It never fails to impress me no matter which season I see it in, and it always sets the mood.

Highlight a Style

If you prefer not to settle on just one artist, perhaps selecting a style will appeal you to more. For instance, for the spring, you could select the work of several photographers, while in the summer you could transition to oil painters, or watercolor artists, Then in the fall, choose another style of work.

The rising sun bathes Friendship Harbor, Maine, in a warm glow as vibrantly painted lobster buoys and rope lay strewn on the wooden dock. Lobster boats wait, anchored in the harbor's waters glistening with the orange and tangerine reflections of the morning light on this summer morn.

Summer could be the season you choose vibrant sunsets and sunrises over a beach from photographers, or watercolors depicting fun at swimming holes, or fields on sunflowers always prevalent in the late summer. Then choose another style of painting for autumn, or another style of photography for winter.

Sunrise at Montauk Point, NY, as the lighthouse stands on a bluff in the distance.

Sunrise at Montauk Point

Montauk lighthouse stands tall against the backdrop of an early morning sky, filled with the mist of a summer morning. The historic structure stands out against dark clouds, while the sun rises above a cloud bank, illuminating the fog with a soft peach-colored glow. The incoming tide washes over the rocky beach, filling the air with the salty and calming smell of the ocean, as a gentle breeze stirs across the sand. The lighthouse’s guiding beacon shines across the shore, signaling for ships to come home and beckoning travelers to explore the coastline.

It can be a lot of fun discovering new art styles, and finding which ones you love, by selecting different styles to feature each season. And don't worry if originals are beyond your budget. Many artists are now offering beautiful museum quality prints of their work, enabling them to appeal to those with any size budget.

Tall White Asters at West Quoddy Head

West Quoddy Head lighthouse stands silent watch over Passamaquoddy Bay on a bright, sunny day in Lubec, Maine. In the foreground, tall white asters gracefully splay their petals among the lush green grass. The contrast between the vibrant wildflowers and the red and white striped exterior of the historic landmark structure create a stunningly peaceful image of a summer morning in down east Maine.

The sun sets behind a field of sunflowers.

Aroostook Sunset

The sun is slowly sinking behind a field of bright yellow sunflowers, casting a warm, hopeful glow on the horizon on a summer evening in Aroostook County, Maine. The sky is a sight to behold as the sun paints it with vibrant orange and pink hues that slowly graduate to a soft, light blue as the night sky begins to take over. Amidst the beauty of the natural world, hope and light continue to blossom in the hearts of those who take the time to appreciate it.

A canopy of autumn foliage arches over Kaaterskill Creek near Hunter, New York.

Kaaterskill Creek

This stunning photo of Kaaterskill Creek allows you to experience the beauty of autumn in the Catskill Mountains all year long. Taken at dawn, the mist creates a magical aura around the glowing creek surrounded by lush trees displaying their autumn foliage. A silent canopy of color looms over the creek, while the water flows through the rocky creek bed. Kaaterskill Creek is located in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, on the north side of Kaaterskill Clove, between the hamlets of Haines Falls and Palenville in Greene County's Town of Hunter.

Highlight a Theme

If you like to have several different styles on display, maybe you'd prefer to highlight a theme that permeates the pieces you show. In autumn, you could choose to show old barns adorned by trees in peak fall color, or mountain streams with colorful foliage. Or perhaps be even more specific and highlight a location with different pieces of the same area during that season.

A covered bridge in northern Maine on a misty autumn morning.

Autumn at Bennet Bean Bridge

A cool mist hangs in the mountains near Wilsons Mill, Maine at Bennett Bean Bridge. Bennett Bean Bridge is a Paddleford truss bridge built in 1898 across the Magalloway River.

Winter could emphasize mountain scenes with snow-covered peaks, or barns with a fresh blanket of snow, or perhaps New England villages with snow falling. In the Spring, blooming trees, flowing waterfalls, vibrant green fields, and colorful pastel flowers can transform your walls into a celebration of new life that Spring always represents.

Glade Creek Grist Mill on an autumn day in West Virginia.

Glade Creek Grist Mill

Standing as a monument to other West Virginia mills that once dotted the area, Glad Creek Grist Mill was constructed from parts of three other grist mills, and completed in 1976. The vivid autumn reds, oranges and yellows of the surrounding trees frame the picturesque mill, giving it an air of warmth and mystery. Sitting atop the hill, the mill is a striking sight, its rustic structure recalling days long past in the morning light. With the creek gently rolling by, the scenery is completed with a gentle, soothing murmur of the falls.

Ultimately, I think it's fun to find art that highlights what's important to you for each season, and depicts what you love about each season.

The sun shines through a grove of aspen trees on a fall morning in Colorado.

Dance of the Aspens II

Weighted by heavy snows as saplings, these aspens, glowing as the sun ignites their dazzling golden foliage, now appear to be dancing in unison due to their curved trunks. One can almost hear the songs they sway to on this crisp autumn morning in the Rockies Colorado, the music provided by songbirds and the light breeze whistling through the trees.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse stands above the snow-covered rocky Maine coastline.

Newfallen Snow at Pemaquid Point

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, at sunrise on a winter morning, stands tall and proud, its white exterior contrasting against the deep blue of the early morning sky. In the foreground, the rocky landscape is blanketed in a layer of fresh snow, covering the ridges of rock of the Pemaquid peninsula and drawing the eye back to the historic beacon. The light of the impending sunrise casts a warm glow over the landscape, illuminating the lighthouse as well as snow-covered rocks and trees, completing this peaceful winter tableau.

Highlight a Color Scheme

Each season always seems to have its own color scheme. Spring time has bright pastel pinks, blues, yellows, greens and purples. Summer tends to be more vibrant blues, yellows, reds, and oranges. Autumns colors are deeper reds, burnt orange, brown, and burnt yellow. Winter's colder temperatures are echoed in cool blues, whites, and greens, while the warmth of the hearth and home is echoed in reds and warmer tones.

There are many ways to determine what art hangs in your home or office, but changing the display for each season is a great way to keep the decor fresh, and a great way to display art if you already have limited wall space but enjoy collecting art from artists you follow. If you have a wall that's already full, but have more work you'd like to show, it may be time to start rotating the art with the changing of the seasons. If this is an approach you'd like to try, but haven't yet begun your collection, I put together a guide for buying art online you may find helpful.
